Beyond Mysticism: The Modern Northwest
This exhibition focuses on the Northwest Mystics, a modern art movement in the 1930s – 40s characterized by its nature-focused, mystical perspective. Featuring more than 150 pieces ranging from the “Big Four” like Mark Tobey and Morris Graves, to notable artists inspired by the same principles including Mark Rothko, Salvador Dali and Max Ernst, this show threads together how the region influenced the broader world. (Accompanying Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Dead Tree Bear Lake” (1929), a “living label” video features Taha Ebrahimi talking about the trees in this seminal painting from O’Keeffe’s first summer in New Mexico.)
Exhibit Tickets: $29.99 (Advance) / $32.99 (Day of)
Additionally, join SAM’s unique Remix after-hours series on March 27, 2026 for an art experience that will include live music and interactive encounters, including a short, intimate talk by Taha about O’Keeffe’s painting, combining botany, history and anthropology to explore how a closer look at trees can help us see art anew.
SAM Remix After-Hours Tickets: $65 (Public) / $45 (SAM Members)

Author Talk
Seattle has one of the most diverse street tree programs in the country — double the diversity of the East Coast, and triple the diversity of the Midwest. Today, only 5% of the city’s trees in the public right-of-way are originally native to King County. Join Taha Ebrahimi for a talk about some of the notable trees near the Burke Museum and their interconnections with our cultural history, followed by a book signing.
